Biography

Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Aliah University, Kolkata

Ghazala Yasmin is the Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Aliah University. She leads independent research and policy discussions towards future academic training in Gender and Media Studies.

Impaneled with the Ministry of Information and Cultural Affairs, She makes documentaries on issues of gender and minority representations. A presiding thematic of her filmic work has been problematising notions of self and the other, of normality and deviance, of the local and the global, through diverse narratives.

Ghazala is an alumna of the International Visitors Leadership Program on Education and Activism for Young Women 2017– sponsored by the U.S Department of State, involving women leaders from 24 countries. She is already working with fellow IVLP Alumni on how to expand the impact of her work, and mentor younger girls to create a gender innovation lab.

An official delegate to a professional leadership program to the People’s Republic of China entitled Women Change-makers: Harboring Hope, Fostering Growth 2019, she focused on women empowerment, poverty alleviation, educational and economic opportunities. The Delegation exchanged notes with Women Leaders, Provincial Heads, Social Entrepreneurs, Academicians, and Scientists from various ethnic minorities in China.

Ghazala is a Google News Network certified trainer on the global Mis/dis-information scenario and she has trained more than 2000 journalists, media professionals and students to verify and debunk fake news, access data visualization tools and create content online. She is a Member of the Curriculum Advisory Board for the BBC Young Reporter global project to impart media literacy at the school level.

She is a National Resource Person for conducting online lecture videos for the Ministry of Human Resource Development University Grants Commission for College and University Faculty on Gender and Representation in Media at UGC HRDC Jamia Millia Islamia, UGC-HRDC BPS Women’s University, Sonepat, SSGT University, Gurugram and various others.

A media educator, filmmaker, policy analyst, feminist activist and social innovator, her work incorporates gender and minority empowerment through inclusive mainstream education, skilling and capacity building. A regular panellist and political commentator for international level debates on television, she addresses gender inequality and ally with progressive movements to build on transformative feminist leadership.
